"A candid memoir about psychiatric training in 1960s London. Brian Barraclough was born in 1933 and grew up in Milford on Auckland's North Shore. His ambition to become a doctor resulted from being an inpatient on a tuberculosis ward when he was 17. After graduating from the University of Otago he practised medicine in Christchurch Hospital and psychiatry in Dunedin Hospital, then sailed to England as a ship's surgeon. He joined the world's foremost postgraduate training programme for psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital, London. During his time there he worked with some of the most eminent psychiatrists of the day. He also had holidays in Europe, a year of psycho-analysis, and a bad trip with LSD. After leaving the Maudsley, Brian worked as a Scientific Officer for Britain's Medical Research Council and became an authority on the clinical and social aspects of suicide. After 38 years in England he retired to Auckland"--Back cover.
